A rather stout plant with a cluster of leaves 15-32 cm high, in the spring and leafless; flowers 4-8 buds 10-20 cm long in the autumn, growing from a stout corm covered with a brown sheath.
Ecology UK: (distribution according to flora) It is rather common at times in damp meadows and woods on basic soils in most of England except the S.E., though much has been extirpated by the plough.
